1. Chilean Fondas

During September, the country is dyed white, blue and red; the colors of the Chilean flag. And a place where this festival is lived with more fervor is in the famous inns (fondas) and ramadas, meeting places to celebrate this date. This year they will be from September 16 to 21.

There, you can enjoy typical food, drinks, children's games and live music. 

Each region and city has its own, standing out for its tradition, gathering and variety of activities, the inns of Santiago (Parque O'higgins, Hipódromo de Independencia, Fonda Doña Flor), Valparaíso (Sporting and Parque Alejo Barrios) and Concepción (Super Biobio Fund). Remember that some of them require an entrance fee and others are free to enter.

2. Traditional Gastronomy

What should never be missing during the National Holidays is food. It doesn't matter if you are vegetarian or vegan, there are options for everyone! The most popular dishes are empanadas de pino, asado, pastel de choclo, choripan and anticucho. 

Chilean cuisine offers a unique combination of flavors that reflect the diversity of the country. Don't forget to accompany your meal with a good Chilean wine or a pisco sour, or the favorite of many, the earthquake. This typical drink is made up of pipeño wine, grenadine (syrup to sweeten) and pineapple ice cream. Don't worry, if you come with small children, there is an alcohol-free option. 3. Parades and Military Parade

Every September 19, Chile celebrates its Great Military Parade. This event is a spectacle that brings together thousands of people in Parque O'Higgins in Santiago.  

This parade is a demonstration of the patriotism and discipline of the Armed Forces. The parade includes music, war and instrumental bands, and an impressive display of troops, including the Carabineros, the Investigative Police, the Air Force and the Military School. It is a unique opportunity to learn about one of the country's most deeply rooted traditions. The most entertaining thing about this stop? The parade of Carabineros puppies and dogs. 4. La Pampilla in Coquimbo

In the north of Chile, the Pampilla de Coquimbo is one of the most important events during this month. This year the celebration will begin on September 16 and for the first time, older adults, people with disabilities, as well as girls and boys up to 10 years old will enter the event for free. 

This festival brings together thousands of people from all over the country, in an atmosphere of celebration, music and tradition, with the musical show being the main tourist attraction, since it usually features recognized national artists. In addition, it is known for fostering a family atmosphere, with activities for all ages.

5. Music and the Cueca

During the National Holidays, the streets of Chile are filled with music and dance. The cueca, the national dance, is the protagonist throughout the country. Best of all, you can enjoy other folkloric styles that vary depending on the region you visit, whether Coquimbo, Concepción, Punta Arenas or Arica.
